Basal Crevasse Formation on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, as Proxy for Past Subglacial Flooding Events

نویسندگان

چکیده

Linear elastic fracture mechanics suggests that short-lived flow accelerations, such as the one initiated by a flooding event beneath Byrd Glacier in 2006, can form abnormally large basal crevasses at grounding line. Airborne radar measurements acquired 2011 reveal hundreds of ranging height from 40–335 m. Particle tracking results show formation largest crevasse occurred line during 2006 event. Very distinctive surface depressions directly overhead, which are observed along flowline to terminus Ross Ice Shelf. By using these proxies for crevasses, we create timeline past subglacial events on Glacier. Understanding frequency and their effect glacier dynamics will help inform models ice sheet stability hydrology.

Flow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica

Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...

Surface "Waves" on Byrd Glacier, Antarctica

Byrd Glacier has one of the largest ice catchment areas in Antarctica, delivers more ice to the Ross Ice Shelf than any other ice stream, and is the fastest of these ice streams. A force balance, combined with a mass balance, demonstrates that stream flow in Byrd Glacier is transitional from sheet flow in East Antarctica to shelf flow in the Ross Ice Shelf. The longitudinal pulling stress, calc...

A New Velocity Map for Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, from Sequential Aster Satellite Imagery

New ice-velocity measurements are obtained for the main trunk of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, using recently acquired Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) imagery. The velocities are derived from the application of a cross-correlation technique to sequential images acquired in 2000 and 2001. Images were co-registered and ortho-rectified with the aid of a digi...

Bed topography of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, and Byrd Glacier, Antarctica

This paper presents the bed topography of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, and Byrd Glacier, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with high-sensitivity radars. To understand the processes causing the speed-up and retreat of outlet glaciers, and to enable the development of nextgeneration ice-sheet models, we need information on bed topography and basal conditions. To this end, we perfor...

Connected subglacial lake drainage beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica

We present conventional and swath altimetry data from Cryosat-2 revealing a system of subglacial lakes that drained between June 2013 and January 2014 under the central part of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. Much of the 10 drainage happened in less than six months, with an apparent connection between three lakes spanning more than 130 km. Hydropotential analysis of the glacier bed shows a l...
